FALL season has arrived and students have been busy!
Everybody has settled into routines and have completed units in:

-Literacy
-Reading Comprehension
-Numeracy
-Functional Math skills

Postcards have arrived to the destinations we sent them:
-Finland arrived in 27 days, travelling 7,543 km
-Massachusetts arrived in 28 days, travelling 4,064 km (taking longer than postcards to Europe)
-Germany arrived in 23 days, travelling 7,866 km
One of our postcards was even picked as a Favorite for a postcrosser in France!  We do live in a Beautiful city!
Students located these locations and plotted them on maps.  We await the arrivals of postcards to Russia, China and the Netherlands!

PEER TUTORS

Meet Diarmuid

Diarmuid is a grade 10 student.  He is easygoing, kind and very helpful with our students.  He is currently attending Photography class with Brennan.  Both seem to be having an awesome time, as they finish a project on underwater photography!  We are lucky to have Diarmuid!

Meet Meghan

Meghan works in our classroom, with a sunshiney personality and a quiet confidence.  The students enjoy working with her.  She brings a shining spirit to our room!

Student Corner

Meet Nick

Nick is a grade 10 student.  He has been working very hard since the beginning of the school year.  Recently, Nick has scored 100% in his Bright Lights reading program.  Also, for 3 weeks in a row, he 'Aced' Math Wizard multiplication.  Nick made a pretty cool car in woodworking too!  Nick chose an interesting writing topic from the Journal Jar.

If I was principal of my school for a day....
I would give everyone detention, I would tell announcements all day on the P.A., I would talk to all the students, and I will ask them how their day went and what courses they're taking.  I would have assemblies for all the students to talk about sports.  I would speak to the Grade 12s to talk about graduation.  I would speak to the Grade 8s about high school.

KEEP UP the great work Nick!

Meet Cole

Cole is a grade 9 student.  He is working hard with Ms. Bowkett, practicing his sight words and continuing to build his reading vocabulary.  Cole has a great sense of humour and is FUN to be around!

SIGNS of FALL

Mr. Deutsch's class went for Nature walks and brought back evidence of Signs of Fall!  They decorated our display cases with beautifully colored Fall leaves.

Ms. Fuller's class researched and answered the question 'Why do leaves change color?'

CHLOROPHYLL became the new word in our class!

SCIENCE EXPERIMENT

Rock Candy

Students gathered together:
-glass jars
-water
-sugar
-a wooden skewer & a clothespin

After proposing their hypotheses, we boiled water and stirred in 22 pounds of sugar, separated into individual jars.  We are presently observing and waiting!

Some skewers already have sugar crystals attached to them.
Stay Tuned for the final conclusion!

Looking forward to:
-Halloween Activities
-news from Mr. Deutsch's pumpkin patch trip
-Daylight Savings
-Remembrance Day Reflections!

SEPTEMBER Sunshine continues into OCTOBER

HERE STAYS THE SUN!

What a delight it has been to see September come to a close and October begin with record breaking dry sunny weather!

We have been busy in our classroom as students continue to learn and build literacy and numeracy skills.  Students have chosen to take advantage of our glorious weather by reading Current Affairs outside.  They discovered that we did, in fact, set a record for the driest September!  A Vancouver couple in their 80s also set a record for being the oldest people to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro.  AND, that Canada's natural resource of maple syrup was the target of a major theft in the East.  Students are discovering that news stories often turn into great geography lessons.

Our display case highlighted a true homegrown hero with Terry Fox tshirts and pictures.  All classes participated in the Terry Fox run/walk.

Lauren and Mrs. Baker

Justus ran the Terry Fox run twice!

Ms. Barnetson, Justus, Ms. Fuller and Mrs. Baker with Terry Fox 'Superman' tshirts!

In Science, we completed our first science experiment with 'Blobs in a Bottle'.  Students learned about density and chemical reaction and had a mini lava lamp to take home!

Ode impressed with his 'Blobs in a Bottle'

Jacob, Nicola, Nick and Justus happy with their creations!

Semiahmoo BASES and Learning Centre students have registered for postcrossing.  Jacob and Mrs. Barnetson went shopping for some local postcards.  We wrote and sent 6 postcards to China, Germany, Finland, Holland, Massachusetts and Russia.  We, in turn, will receive 6 postcards from various locations in the world.  What a perfect way to practice our mapping skills in Socials!

OUR WONDERFUL PEER TUTORS!

Meet Jasmine

Jasmine is one of our senior peer tutors.  She is a grade 12 student.  Jasmine brings an enthusiastic, helpful spirit to our classroom.  Great SMILE too!
We are Blessed to have Jasmine work with the students in our program.

Meet Nicola

Nicola is our most junior peer tutor.  She is in grade 10.  We enjoy Nicola's easygoing, friendly personality.  Great fashion sense too!
We are lucky to have Nicola with us!

STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENT

Meet Zola

Zola is one of our senior students.  She is in grade 12.  During Social Circles, we discovered that Zola has an extraordinarily beautiful singing voice.  She shared a dream that she had kept secret.  This was her desire to sing 'O Canada' on the school PA system.
Zola wrote a letter to our principal, Mrs. Hadikin and was soon invited to her office.

Mrs. Hadikin and Zola.

Zola's JOY after singing for Mrs. Hadikin.

Zola's dream of singing 'O Canada' will become a reality in the coming weeks.  We couldn't be prouder of you Zola.  WAY TO GO!

This week, our display case transformed from Terry Fox's 'WITH A DREAM, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE' to Signs of FALL and THANKSGIVING.  Mr. Deutsch's class went searching for signs of Fall and found many gorgeous colored leaves.  Students wrote about their families friends, sports, peaceful country, school, pets and love that they are all THANKFUL for!  Mr. Deutsch's class made delicious ginger/molasses cookies and hot chocolate for everybody on Friday afternoon.  YUM!
We wish everybody a WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING WEEKEND!
